Why Canberra

  • All major national institutions are free: Australian War Memorial, National Museum of Australia, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery
  • Kangaroos genuinely wander through suburban reserves — easy wildlife spotting
  • Free Culture Loop hop-on-hop-off bus connecting all major attractions

Canberra is Australia's purpose-built national capital — designed from scratch in the early 20th century and plopped between Sydney and Melbourne as a political compromise. The result is a planned city of wide boulevards, lake frontage, and an extraordinary concentration of national institutions: museums, galleries, parliament, and memorials that are all free to enter and world-class in quality. It's not the first city that comes to mind on the backpacker circuit, but Canberra consistently surprises travellers who give it a chance. The national museums alone could fill two or three days, the surrounding nature (kangaroos grazing in suburbs, short bush walks to panoramic views) is excellent, and a craft brewery and winery scene has emerged over the past decade that rivals much larger cities. It works best as a two-night stop between Sydney and Melbourne rather than a destination in itself.
