Why Coral Bay

  • Snorkel a World Heritage-listed reef directly from the beach — no boat or park pass needed
  • Swim with manta rays that glide through the shallows year-round
  • Whale shark encounters from March to July, with tours departing from town

Coral Bay is a tiny coastal settlement of fewer than 200 permanent residents, perched on the southern doorstep of Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. The town exists almost entirely for reef tourism — and with good reason. Unlike the Great Barrier Reef, Ningaloo is a fringing reef, meaning the coral starts just metres from the beach at Bills Bay. You can wade in from the sand and be snorkelling over pristine coral gardens within minutes, no boat required. For backpackers, Coral Bay offers a more intimate, laid-back alternative to Exmouth, 150 km to the north. It is small (one main road, a handful of businesses) and remote, but the marine life is world-class.
