Off the beaten track

Why Hay

  • Qualifies as a specified regional area for Working Holiday Visa 88-day farm work requirements
  • Genuinely off the beaten track — experience real outback Australia without tourist crowds
  • Five excellent museums including the Shear Outback (Australian Shearers' Hall of Fame) and the Dunera POW Camp Interpretive Centre

Hay is a tiny outback plains town in the western Riverina region of New South Wales, sitting on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River roughly halfway between Sydney and Adelaide. With a population of around 2,800, it is about as far from the backpacker trail as you can get — and that is precisely its charm. The town is surrounded by vast, impossibly flat pastoral plains that stretch to every horizon, giving it some of the most spectacular sunsets in Australia. Hay is not a party destination. There are no hostels, no pub crawls, and no Instagram influencers jostling for the same shot. What you will find is a genuinely warm rural community, a fascinating cluster of museums, a beautiful river for swimming, and a window into outback Australia that most travellers never see. If you are chasing an authentic experience — or need regional days for your visa extension — Hay deserves a stop.
