Why Launceston

  • Cataract Gorge — world-class natural attraction, free entry, 15 minutes walk from the city
  • Gateway to the Tamar Valley wine region
  • Cheaper than Hobart — good budget-stretching option

Launceston is Tasmania's second-largest city and its northern gateway, sitting where the North Esk and South Esk rivers converge to form the Tamar. It's smaller than Hobart (population ~90,000), quieter, and considerably cheaper — which makes it the preferred entry point for travellers arriving from Devonport by ferry, or flying in from Melbourne on a budget. The city centre is compact and handsome, built in a Victorian style that the locals are rightly proud of. But Launceston's real calling card is right on its edge: Cataract Gorge, a fifteen-minute walk from the city centre, is one of Australia's most dramatic natural features in an urban setting — a gorge carved by the South Esk River with swimming, chair lift, walking tracks, and free entry. It alone is worth a night's stay. Launceston is also the hub for Tasmania's best wine region (the Tamar Valley), some excellent live music, and quick access to the Bay of Fires, Freycinet, and the northern wilderness. Working Holiday Visa holders should note strong farm work availability in the Tamar Valley (stone fruit, apples, cherries, berries) from December through April.
