Why Mission Beach

  • Closest point on the east coast to the Great Barrier Reef (20km)
  • Rainforest meets beach — dual World Heritage environments
  • Tully River white-water rafting (some of Australia's best grades)

Mission Beach is a coastal town sitting midway between Townsville and Cairns in Tropical North Queensland — a location that makes it both easy to pass through and hard to leave. The town is actually a cluster of four small beach villages (South Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach, Mission Beach itself, and Bingil Bay) connected by 14km of golden sand backed by World Heritage-listed rainforest. What sets Mission Beach apart from its louder neighbours is the contrast it offers: the Great Barrier Reef is only 20km offshore, ancient Wet Tropics rainforest starts practically at the beach, and the permanent population hovers under 5,000. It's a place where cassowaries wander across roads, where the Tully River offers some of Australia's best white-water rafting, and where the vibe is genuinely unhurried. Not a party town — a nature town.
