Why Proserpine

  • Gateway transport hub for Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands (airport, train station, bus stop)
  • Cheaper accommodation than Airlie Beach — good option if you're on a tight budget
  • Regional farm work opportunities (sugar cane, fruit picking) that count towards 88-day visa extension

Proserpine is a small sugar cane town of around 3,500 people in Queensland's Whitsunday Region, sitting on the Bruce Highway about 25 km inland from Airlie Beach. Named by explorer George Dalrymple in 1859 after the Roman goddess of fertility, it's known locally as the "Sweet Heart of the Whitsundays" thanks to its sugar cane heritage. Most backpackers pass through Proserpine rather than stay — it's the transport hub for the Whitsundays, home to the region's airport and railway station. That said, Proserpine has its own quiet charm with a handful of worthwhile attractions, and it's a useful base for working holiday makers chasing regional farm work to extend their visa.
