Why Kyoto

  • Japan's cultural capital with 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the city alone
  • Iconic sights like Fushimi Inari's thousands of vermillion torii gates and the Golden Pavilion
  • Affordable by Japan standards — many top attractions are free or under $5

Japan's ancient imperial capital is the cultural heart of the country and an essential stop on any East Asia backpacking route. With over 2,000 temples and shrines, traditional wooden machiya townhouses, and geisha districts that look like they've barely changed in centuries, Kyoto delivers a side of Japan you simply can't find in Tokyo or Osaka. The city blends the old and new seamlessly — one moment you're wandering through a serene Zen garden, the next you're browsing a modern craft coffee shop in a converted warehouse. For backpackers, Kyoto is surprisingly affordable by Japanese standards. Hostel dorms run around $20-30 per night, many of the most iconic sights are free or under $5, and the street food scene — from Nishiki Market stalls to ramen shops near the station — keeps you well-fed without breaking the bank. The city is compact enough to explore by bicycle, and the hostel scene is excellent, with a mix of social party spots and traditional Japanese guesthouses where you sleep on futons and tatami mats. Peak seasons (cherry blossom in late March to early April, and autumn foliage in November) are magical but busy and pricier. Shoulder months like May, early October, or even September offer fewer crowds and more wallet-friendly accommodation, while still delivering incredible experiences.
