Why Gingin

  • Gravity Discovery Centre and Observatory — world-class science and astronomy facility with a 45-metre leaning tower
  • Charming heritage township with historic buildings and the iconic Gingin Brook water wheel
  • Gateway to Lancelin — sand dunes, windsurfing, and coastal adventures just 50 km west

Gingin is a quaint historic township 83 kilometres north of Perth on the Brand Highway, and one of the oldest settlements in Western Australia. With a population of around 850, it's a tiny place, but it punches well above its weight thanks to the world-class Gravity Discovery Centre and Observatory on its outskirts — a must for science-loving travellers. The town itself is a charming stop with heritage buildings, a lazy tree-lined brook running through its heart, and a classic country pub. For backpackers, Gingin works best as a day trip from Perth or a stopover en route to the adventure town of Lancelin and the Turquoise Coast. The surrounding Gingin Shire also offers farmstays, vineyards, and olive groves.
