Why Northam

  • Home to Australia's longest pedestrian suspension bridge spanning the Avon River
  • Hot air ballooning over the Avon Valley — one of WA's most unique experiences
  • The Avon Descent (August) — a spectacular two-day white-water race from Northam to Perth

Northam is the largest town in Western Australia's Avon Valley, sitting at the confluence of the Avon and Mortlock Rivers about 97 kilometres east of Perth. With a population of around 6,700, it's the commercial hub of the central Wheatbelt and has a surprising amount to offer budget travellers — from hot air ballooning over golden farmland to the wild Avon Descent river race in August. The town is home to Australia's longest pedestrian suspension bridge (117 metres) and serves as a practical base for exploring the wider Avon Valley region. For working holiday makers, Northam's surrounding agricultural belt provides solid seasonal work opportunities.
