Why Merredin

  • Strategic halfway point on the Perth–Kalgoorlie drive (roughly 3 hours each way)
  • Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail — follow the route of CY O'Connor's engineering marvel
  • Merredin Peak — granite outcrop with interpretive walk and panoramic views

Merredin is the largest town in the eastern Wheatbelt, sitting almost exactly halfway between Perth and Kalgoorlie on the Great Eastern Highway, roughly 260 kilometres east of Perth. With a population of about 2,800, it serves as the commercial and service centre for the surrounding grain-growing district — approximately 40% of Western Australia's wheat comes from within a 100 km radius. For backpackers, Merredin is primarily a strategic stopover on the Perth–Kalgoorlie–Goldfields route, but it rewards those who linger with military history, the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail, granite outcrops, and genuine outback Wheatbelt character. The town has a surprising amount of heritage and natural attractions for its size.
